Chittagong- (UNB)- National Board of Revenue will take urgent steps to remove bottlenecks in the pre-shipment inspection system to make it more effective.

NBR Chairman Zakir Ahmed Khan gave this assurance when Chittagong Chamber leaders at a pre-budget meeting referred to harassment and lengthy procedures they face under PSI system.

Khan also informed them of NBR plans to computerise Chittagong Customs House and befit it with changed global trade scenario.

The port city business community vented their grievances against the activities of the PSI companies that they alleged add to the import costs as well as harassment.

Chittagong Chamber president Saifuzzaman Chowdhury (Zaved) placed an eight-point recommendation to ensure effective monitoring and accountability of the PSI companies. He suggested that the Chittagong Chamber be represented in the review committee on PSI affairs.

The port city chamber leaders also demanded reduction of power tariff in peak hours as they felt industrialists must not compensate for the authority’s failure to redress power crisis.

They expressed their concern over the 50 per cent LC margin on commercial imports and viewed the issue should be left with the bank-client relations.

NBR member (Customs) Abul Kashem, member (admin) Mobarrak Ali Mollah, Chittagong Customs Commissioner AHM Manzur Mannan, country representatives of PSI companies attended the meeting while Chamber leaders SM Nurul Huq and Sarwar Maksud Nizam also spoke.
